Iowa Medicare plans provide excellent coverage, but many individuals opt for Medicare Supplements or Medicare Advantage plans to address additional costs and enjoy greater flexibility.
Medicare Supplement plans help cover expenses such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also offer the freedom to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare.
In Iowa, individuals become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and extends three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplement plans.
While you can apply for a Medicare Supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is the optimal time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health during this window.
Medicare Supplement plans in Iowa help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. This can save you thousands of dollars, as Original Medicare covers only about 80% of outpatient expenses and has no cap on out-of-pocket costs. A Medicare Supplement plan sets a limit on your out-of-pocket spending.
One notable benefit is that you’re not restricted to provider networks—you can visit any doctor who accepts Medicare.
There are 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans, labeled A through N. All plans with the same letter provide identical coverage, regardless of the provider, with the only difference being price. To ensure you’re getting the best value, it’s important to compare rates. Or let us handle the comparison for you, saving you both time and money.
As of the end of 2019, new Medicare enrollees in Iowa are no longer able to select Medigap Plans C or F. However, beneficiaries already enrolled in these plans can keep their coverage. Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, price is the only variable. Make sure someone is shopping your policy to help you secure the best deal.
Iowa offers up to 20 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county, with all but one county providing access to these plans. Known as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage plans are private Medicare options that include all the benefits of Original Medicare while offering additional features such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In 2019, Iowa offered 28 Part D plans. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
