After enrolling in Michigan Medicare plans, you’ll need to decide whether to choose Medicare Supplement insurance or a Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare Supplements help cover deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other costs not covered by Original Medicare, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also provide the flexibility to see any doctor who accepts Medicare.
Medicare Advantage plans, on the other hand, offer coverage similar to Original Medicare but often include additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, and may come with no extra premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in Michigan become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and lasts for three months after. You can also apply for Medicare Supplements during this period.
While you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is the ideal time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health.
Medicare Supplements in Michigan help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay, saving you thousands of dollars. Since Medicare typically covers only about 80% of outpatient expenses and has no limit on out-of-pocket costs, a Supplement can help cap your spending.
A key advantage is the flexibility to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, without being limited by networks.
There are 10 standardized plans, labeled A through N, with the same coverage within each letter category. The only difference between these plans is the price, so it’s important to compare options. You can save time and money by letting us handle the shopping for you!
After 2019, new Medicare enrollees in Michigan will no longer be able to choose Medigap Plans C or F, though those already enrolled in these plans can keep them.
Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, the only variation will be in price. Be sure to have someone shop your policy to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Michigan offers up to 50 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county. Also referred to as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage is a private plan that provides all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional perks such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not cover prescription drugs, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this coverage. In Michigan, there were 29 Part D plans available in 2019. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
