In North Carolina, Medicare plans beyond Original Medicare are offered by private insurance companies.
These plans are often a better fit for many Medicare beneficiaries.
Medicare Supplement plans help cover deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other costs that Original Medicare doesn’t, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also allow you the flexibility to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans provide similar coverage to Original Medicare, but with added benefits like prescription drug coverage, and in some cases, they come with no extra premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in North Carolina become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period begins three months before your birth month and extends three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplement plans. While you can enroll in a Supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is the best opportunity to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health.
Medicare Supplement plans in North Carolina help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay.
This can save you thousands of dollars since Medicare only covers about 80% of outpatient costs, and Original Medicare has no cap on out-of-pocket expenses. A Supplement plan sets a limit on your out-of-pocket spending.
Another advantage is that you’re not confined to any networks and can visit any doctor who accepts Medicare.
There are 10 Medicare Supplement plans, labeled A through N, that offer standardized coverage. This means all plans with the same letter provide identical benefits, with the only difference being the price. Be sure to compare your options, or let us handle the shopping for you to save both time and money!
As of the end of 2019, new Medicare enrollees in North Carolina can no longer select Medigap Plans C or F. However, those already enrolled in these plans can keep their coverage.
Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, price is the only variable. Make sure to have someone compare policies to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
North Carolina has up to 29 Medicare Advantage plans available, depending on what county you live in. Also known as Medicare Part C plans, Medicare Advantage is a private Medicare plan that provides all Original Medicare benefits but also include extra benefits like dental, prescription drugs, and vision coverage. In North Carolina, open enrollment for Medicare Advantage begins on January 1 and ends on March 31. Those who are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan during this open enrollment or opt to have Original Medicare instead.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In 2019, North Carolina offered 28 Part D plans. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
