Travel Medical Insurance
International medical coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions. Real protection for travelers at any age — vacationers, expats, snowbirds, students, and beyond.
Your U.S. Health Plan Doesn't Travel With You
Most U.S. health insurance — whether it's an employer plan, an ACA marketplace plan, or Medicare — provides little to no coverage once you step outside the country. ACA and employer plans typically only cover emergencies abroad, often with significant limits. Medicare beneficiaries have it even tougher: Original Medicare covers almost nothing internationally, certain Medigap plans cap foreign-travel emergencies at a $50,000 lifetime maximum, and most Medicare Advantage plans only pay for emergency or urgent care while traveling.
That's why a dedicated travel medical plan matters whenever you're spending meaningful time outside the U.S. — whether that's a two-week vacation, a semester abroad, or a year overseas. We've partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions (formerly GeoBlue) — a trusted name backed by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association — to make international coverage simple to shop and easy to use.

Who Should Consider Travel Medical Insurance?
Vacationers & Cruisers
Cruises, European tours, beach trips, and international vacations all carry real medical risk. One hospitalization abroad can cost tens of thousands out-of-pocket.
Snowbirds & Long-Stay Travelers
Spending winter in Mexico, the Caribbean, or Europe? Your U.S. health plan stays home. A travel plan fills the gap while you're out of the country.
Business Travelers
Frequent international trips for work deserve real protection — not just trip-cancellation coverage that won't pay a hospital bill.
Students, Missionaries & Volunteers
Study-abroad semesters, mission trips, and volunteer work overseas need dedicated medical coverage with emergency evacuation built in.
Expats & Remote Workers Abroad
Living overseas for months or years? Long-Term plans provide year-round international coverage that renews annually.
Families Traveling Together
Cover the whole family on one policy. Kids, parents, and grandparents all benefit from the same global network and emergency support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need travel medical insurance if I already have health insurance?
Most U.S. health insurance — employer plans, ACA marketplace plans, and Medicare — provides limited or no coverage outside the country. Employer and ACA plans usually cover emergencies abroad with significant restrictions; Original Medicare covers almost nothing internationally. A dedicated travel medical plan fills that gap with real coverage, a global provider network, and emergency evacuation built in.
Who is travel medical insurance for?
Anyone spending meaningful time outside the U.S. — vacationers, cruisers, business travelers, snowbirds, students studying abroad, missionaries, volunteers, expats, remote workers, and families traveling together. Plans are available for travelers of all ages, from infants to seniors.
What is Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions?
Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions (formerly GeoBlue) is the international travel and expat insurance arm of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Plans include access to a global network of providers in 190+ countries, emergency medical evacuation, telemedicine with U.S.-based doctors, and 24/7 multilingual support.
What kinds of travel plans are available?
Three main options: Single Trip plans cover one trip lasting 1 to 182 days. Multi-Trip plans cover unlimited international trips over a 12-month period (up to 70 days per trip). Long-Term plans provide year-round international coverage for expats and people living abroad for 3+ months at a time and are renewable annually.
Is travel medical insurance the same as trip-cancellation insurance?
No — and that's an important distinction. Trip-cancellation insurance reimburses you for non-refundable trip costs if you have to cancel. Travel medical insurance pays for actual medical care while you're abroad — doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, and emergency evacuation. Many travelers benefit from having both, but they solve very different problems.
Does Medicare cover me when I travel outside the United States?
Generally, no. Original Medicare provides almost no coverage outside the U.S. A few Medigap plans (C, D, F, G, M, and N) include limited foreign travel emergency benefits — typically capped at a $50,000 lifetime maximum, with a $250 deductible and 80% coverage only during the first 60 days of a trip. Most Medicare Advantage plans only cover emergency or urgent care abroad. For meaningful international protection, a dedicated travel medical plan is the right call.
Will buying a travel plan affect my existing health insurance?
No. Travel medical plans through BCBS Global Solutions are sold independently and don't affect your regular health insurance, employer plan, or Medicare coverage. They run alongside whatever you already have, simply providing the international coverage that domestic plans don't include.
