Almost half of the Medicare plans in Florida are Medicare Advantage (Plan C) plans. Due to their popularity and the large number of baby boomers in the state, there are many options available for Plan C.
However, depending on your needs, a Medicare Supplement plan might be a more cost-effective choice.
As is the case with every state, Medicare beneficiaries in Florida are eligible for Medicare at age 65. Initial enrollment begins three months before your birth month and lasts three months after. During initial enrollment, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.
Although you can enroll in a supplement at any time, initial enrollment is the best time to do so because you cannot be turned down due to your health.
Medicare Supplements in Florida help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay.
This can save you thousands, as Medicare only covers about 80% of outpatient costs.
Another benefit is that you're not restricted to any networks, so you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.
There are 10 standardized plans, labeled A through N. This means that all plans with the same letter provide the same coverage, and the only difference is the price. Be sure to shop around for the best deal, or you can use our service to save time and money by letting us compare plans for you!
After 2019, new Medicare enrollees in Florida won’t be able to select Medigap Plans C or F, though current beneficiaries can keep these plans.
Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, the only difference will be the price. Make sure you have someone comparing policies to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Florida offers up to 68 Medicare Advantage plans in certain counties. Also referred to as Medicare Part C, these private plans cover all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional perks such as dental, prescription drug, and vision coverage.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In 2019, Florida offers 27 Part D plans. If you want to avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
