Dental, Vision and Hearing

Many of our clients are surprised to learn that Medicare offers limited coverage for dental, vision, and hearing services. These areas are crucial to our overall health, so it's surprising that they aren't included in Medicare's benefits.

That said, Medicare does cover some services related to these areas, such as cataract surgery. However, most routine, preventive, and day-to-day treatments are not covered.

Let’s take a closer look at dental, vision, and hearing services to see what Medicare does cover and explore options for getting additional coverage in these important areas.

Here’s how you can obtain coverage for dental, vision, and hearing needs:

1. Dental Insurance

● Coverage Options:

Dental insurance can help cover the cost of routine care, including cleanings, exams, fillings, and crowns. It can also assist with more complex procedures such as root canals and dentures.

● Standalone Plans:

Many individuals choose standalone dental insurance plans separate from their Medicare coverage. These plans typically offer varying levels of coverage and benefits, depending on the plan.

● Medicare Advantage Plans:

Some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans include dental coverage as part of their benefits, making it a convenient option if you want to bundle dental care with your overall Medicare coverage.

2. Vision Insurance

Coverage Options:

Vision insurance helps cover eye care services like eye exams, prescription glasses, and contact lenses. It may also help with treatments for specific eye conditions.

Standalone Plans: Standalone vision insurance plans are available, providing coverage for routine eye care and eyewear. These plans can differ in both cost and benefits, so it’s important to compare available options.

Medicare Advantage Plans:

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer vision benefits, making it easy to incorporate eye care with your Medicare coverage.

3. Hearing Insurance

Coverage Options:

Hearing insurance helps cover the costs of hearing aids, hearing tests, and other related services, assisting with both evaluations and devices.

Standalone Plans:

Standalone hearing insurance plans focus specifically on hearing care. These plans typically provide coverage for hearing aids and related services.

Medicare Advantage Plans:

Certain Medicare Advantage plans offer hearing benefits, which may include coverage for hearing aids and exams, providing added convenience and potential savings.

By exploring these options, you can ensure that your dental, vision, and hearing needs are covered while managing costs effectively.

Does Medicare Include Dental Insurance?

Dental coverage is often considered one of Medicare’s biggest gaps. To clarify, when we refer to "Medicare," we mean Original Medicare, which includes Parts A and B.

Medicare Part B does cover dental treatment, but only in limited and uncommon situations. For example, coverage might apply in cases such as:

● An oral exam required before a kidney transplant

● Jaw reconstruction after an accident

● Tooth extractions needed prior to jaw radiation therapy

● Exams necessary for oral surgery

For most people, these situations are rare. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover routine dental care or more familiar treatments like cleanings, crowns, bridges, fillings, root canals, or dentures.

Does Medicare Include Vision Insurance?

Medicare provides vision coverage in much the same way it handles dental care—offering assistance for a few major needs but not covering routine services.

Let’s start with eye exams, often called eye refractions. Medicare generally doesn’t pay for routine checkups unless a serious condition is suspected. For instance, it covers a glaucoma screening once every 12 months, but only for high-risk individuals. High-risk groups include people with diabetes, those with a family history of glaucoma, African Americans aged 50 and older, and Hispanic Americans aged 65 and older.

Medicare also covers certain diagnostic tests and treatments if you are diagnosed with macular degeneration.

When it comes to eyeglasses and contact lenses, coverage is rare. However, if you undergo cataract surgery with an intraocular lens implant, Medicare will pay for one pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses. This is a one-time benefit, with restrictions on the type of frames covered.

Finally, Medicare covers eye prostheses for individuals who have lost or experienced shrinkage of an eye due to birth defects, trauma, or surgery. Replacements are covered every five years.

All these services are included under Medicare Part B. For each, the Part B deductible applies, and you’ll be responsible for 20% of the Medicare-approved cost.

Medicare and Hearing Coverage

Let’s discuss hearing exams and hearing aids.

Medicare provides limited coverage for hearing tests, but only if your doctor deems them medically necessary. Exams to diagnose or treat a specific hearing condition are covered.

Additionally, you can receive a hearing exam every 12 months without needing your doctor’s approval if you have non-acute hearing conditions, such as gradual hearing loss over time, or if diagnostic services are required for hearing loss managed with a surgically-implanted hearing device.

However, Medicare does not cover hearing aids or the exams necessary to fit them.

Like vision care, hearing-related benefits are included under Medicare Part B. After you meet the deductible, Medicare covers 80% of approved services.

Get Coverage for Dental, Vision, and Hearing Services

Feeling underwhelmed by what you’ve learned so far? We get it. Most people aren’t thrilled about the prospect of paying out-of-pocket for dental, vision, and hearing care. Especially since these costs can add up quickly and may not fit into your budget.

The good news is that you have options! We’ll highlight a couple here, but don’t forget! You can always reach out to MAC Insurance for personalized guidance tailored to your needs.

Medicare Advantage

You’ve probably seen the TV commercials promoting Medicare Advantage plans—they’re packed with promises of extensive benefits and convenient coverage. While it’s wise not to believe everything you hear, some of the claims are true!

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. By law, these plans must provide at least the same coverage as Parts A and B, but most go above and beyond.

One area where Medicare Advantage plans stand out is in dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Almost all of these plans offer more comprehensive coverage than Original Medicare in these areas. For instance, some plans provide thousands of dollars in dental benefits, and a few even cover dental implants.

Before deciding if a Medicare Advantage plan is right for you, it’s important to learn more about how they work. That said, they can be an excellent choice for many people.

Dental, Vision, Hearing Insurance Plans

Another straightforward option is to add a Dental, Vision, and Hearing (DVH) policy to your insurance plan.

We partner with several insurance companies that offer DVH plans, making it easy to supplement your Original Medicare coverage without enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Insurance providers often combine dental, vision, and hearing benefits into a single plan, recognizing the gaps in Medicare coverage. Each plan varies, so it’s important to review the specific details to understand what’s covered in each area.

Alternatively, you can opt for separate plans if you have different priorities. For example, some beneficiaries focus more on dental coverage and choose a dental-only plan while forgoing vision or hearing benefits.

With so many options available, one of our advisors at MAC Insurance can help you determine which solution works best for your needs.
