Did you know that Kansas Medicare plans, like those in other states, leave coverage gaps that could result in thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses? This is one reason why Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans are so popular.
Medicare Supplement plans cover the deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other costs that Original Medicare doesn’t, potentially saving you thousands. They also give you the flexibility to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans provide similar coverage to Original Medicare, but with added benefits such as prescription drug coverage, and in some cases, they may not require an additional premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in Kansas become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and extends three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplement plans.
While you can enroll in a Supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is the ideal time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health during this window.
Medicare Supplement plans in Kansas help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance left by Original Medicare.
This can save you thousands of dollars since Medicare only covers about 80% of outpatient expenses, and Original Medicare has no limit on out-of-pocket costs. A Supplement plan would cap your out-of-pocket spending.
Another key benefit is that you’re not restricted to any networks and can visit any doctor who accepts Medicare.
There are 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans, labeled A through N. All plans with the same letter must offer the same coverage, with the only difference being price. Be sure to compare your options, or let us handle the shopping for you to save both time and money!
As of the end of 2019, new Medicare enrollees in Kansas can no longer select Medigap Plans C or F. However, those already enrolled in these plans can continue their coverage.
Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, price is the only variable. Make sure to have someone shop your policy to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Kansas offers up to 40 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county. Also referred to as Medicare Part C, these private plans provide all the benefits of Original Medicare while offering additional coverage, such as dental, prescription drugs, and vision care.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not cover prescription drugs, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this coverage. In 2019, Kansas offered 28 Part D plans. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
