Kentucky Medicare plans are similar to those in most other states. Original Medicare leaves a significant portion of healthcare costs uncovered, making Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans essential to fill those gaps.
Medicare Supplement plans help cover deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other expenses that Original Medicare doesn’t, potentially saving you thousands. They also allow you the flexibility to see any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans provide similar coverage to Original Medicare, but with added benefits such as prescription drug coverage, and in some cases, they don’t require an additional premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in Kentucky become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and continues for three months after. During this period, you can also apply for Medicare Supplement plans.
While you can enroll in a Supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is the best opportunity to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health.
Medicare Supplement plans in Kentucky help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance not covered by Original Medicare.
This can save you thousands of dollars, as Medicare only pays for about 80% of outpatient expenses. Additionally, Original Medicare has no limits on out-of-pocket costs. A Supplement plan places a cap on your out-of-pocket spending.
One of the main benefits is that you’re not restricted to any networks, so you can visit any doctor who accepts Medicare.
There are 10 standardized plans, labeled A through N. All plans with the same letter offer the same coverage, with the only difference being price. Be sure to compare plans, or let us handle the shopping for you to save both time and money!
After 2019, new Medicare enrollees in Kentucky will no longer be able to choose Medigap Plans C or F. However, those already enrolled in these plans can keep them.
Because these plans are standardized by the federal government, the only difference is price. Be sure to have someone compare policies to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Kentucky offers up to 26 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county. Also referred to as Medicare Part C, these private plans provide all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional coverage such as dental, prescription drugs, and vision care.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In 2019, Kentucky offered 28 Part D plans. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
