New Mexico Medicare Plans

If you're exploring Medicare options in New Mexico, you can choose between Original Medicare, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Supplement plans help cover costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also allow you to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans provide similar benefits to Original Medicare but often include extras, such as prescription drug coverage, and may come with no additional premium.

New Mexico Medicare plans open enrollment

Medicare beneficiaries in New Mexico become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and continues for three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplement plans.

While you can apply for a Medicare Supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is ideal since you cannot be denied coverage based on your health during this window.

Medigap Plans

Medicare Supplement plans in New Mexico help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. This can save you thousands of dollars, as Original Medicare typically covers only about 80% of outpatient expenses and has no cap on out-of-pocket costs. A Medicare Supplement plan sets a limit on your out-of-pocket spending.

An added benefit is that you’re not restricted to provider networks—you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

There are 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans, labeled A through N. Plans with the same letter offer identical coverage, regardless of the provider; the only difference is the price. To ensure you’re getting the best deal, it’s important to compare prices. Or, let us handle the comparison for you to save time and money!

Note that as of the end of 2019, new Medicare enrollees cannot choose Medigap Plans C or F in New Mexico. However, those already enrolled in these plans can keep their coverage. Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, price remains the only variable. Be sure to have someone shop around to secure the best rate for you.

Medicare Advantage plans

In New Mexico, up to 23 Medicare Advantage plans are available, depending on your county. Also called Medicare Part C, these private plans provide all the benefits of Original Medicare while offering additional perks like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.

The Medicare Advantage open enrollment period in New Mexico runs from January 1 to March 31. During this time, individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can switch to a different plan or return to Original Medicare.

Medicare Part D

Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D to cover these expenses. In 2019, New Mexico offered 27 Part D plans. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider either a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
