Ohio Medicare plans, including Original Medicare, do not set limits on out-of-pocket costs. For this reason, many Medicare beneficiaries turn to Medicare Supplements (Medigap) and Medicare Advantage plans to manage their healthcare expenses.
Medicare Supplements can help cover costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also offer the flexibility to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans provide comparable coverage to Original Medicare, often with added benefits such as prescription drug coverage, and may not charge an extra premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in Ohio become eligible at age 65. The initial enrollment period begins three months before your birth month and continues three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.
While you can enroll in a supplement plan at any time, the initial enrollment period is the best time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health during this window.
Medicare Supplements in Ohio cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare does not cover.
This can save you thousands of dollars, as Medicare only pays about 80% of outpatient expenses and has no limit on out-of-pocket costs. A supplement plan would set a cap on your out-of-pocket spending.
Another key advantage is that you aren’t restricted to specific networks and can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

Ohio offers up to 60 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county of residence. Also known as Medicare Part C, these private plans provide all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional perks such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
In Ohio, the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage runs from January 1 to March 31. During this time, individuals already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan or choose to return to Original Medicare.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In Ohio, there are 26 Part D plans available in 2019. If you want to avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider exploring Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan.
