If you're searching for South Carolina Medicare plans that provide enough coverage to make frequent hospital visits affordable, you might need to consider adding a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare Supplements help cover deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other costs not covered by Original Medicare, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also offer the flexibility to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage similar to Original Medicare but include additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, and may not require an extra premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in South Carolina become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and continues for three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.
While you can enroll in a supplement at any time, the initial enrollment period is the best time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health.
Medicare Supplements in South Carolina help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay.
This can save you thousands of dollars, as Medicare typically covers only about 80% of outpatient costs and has no limit on out-of-pocket expenses. A supplement can provide a cap on your out-of-pocket spending.
One additional benefit is that you aren’t restricted to any networks and can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

South Carolina offers up to 41 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county. Also known as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage is a private plan that provides all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional perks such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage. In South Carolina, the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage runs from January 1 to March 31. During this time, individuals already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan or choose to return to Original Medicare.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In South Carolina, there were 26 Part D plans available in 2019. To avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
