If you're a current or soon-to-be beneficiary of Tennessee Medicare plans, you may find a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan to be helpful.
Medicare Supplements help cover deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also give you the flexibility to see any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans provide similar coverage to Original Medicare but include additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, and may not require an extra premium.
Medicare beneficiaries in Tennessee become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and continues for three months after. You can also apply for Medicare Supplements during this time.
While you can enroll in a supplement at any time, the initial enrollment period is the ideal time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health.
Medicare Supplements in Tennessee help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay.
This can save you thousands of dollars, as Medicare only covers about 80% of outpatient costs, and Original Medicare has no limits on out-of-pocket expenses. A supplement can provide a cap on your out-of-pocket spending.
Another benefit is that you aren’t restricted to any networks, allowing you to see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

Tennessee offers up to 37 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county. Also known as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage is a private plan that provides all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional perks such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage. In Tennessee, the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage runs from January 1 to March 31. During this time, those already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan or choose to return to Original Medicare.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In 2019, Tennessee offered 29 Part D plans. If you want to avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
