Texas Medicare plans have coverage gaps that could significantly affect your finances if you need frequent or extended hospital visits. Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plans may help fill those gaps.
Medicare Supplements cover costs like deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and more that Original Medicare doesn’t, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. They also offer the flexibility to visit any doctor who accepts Medicare. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage similar to Original Medicare but with additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, and in some cases, they come with no extra premium cost.
In Texas, individuals become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month and continues for three months after. During this time, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.
While you can enroll in a Supplement at any time, the initial enrollment period is the ideal time to do so, as you cannot be denied coverage based on your health.
Medicare Supplements in Texas help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance left by Original Medicare, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. Original Medicare covers only about 80% of outpatient expenses, and it has no limits on out-of-pocket costs. A supplement can cap your out-of-pocket spending, providing additional financial protection.
One key advantage is the freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, as you're not restricted to specific networks.
There are 10 standardized plans, labeled A through N, which offer the same coverage. The only difference between them is the price, so it’s important to shop around for the best deal. Alternatively, you can use our service to save time and money—we’ll handle the shopping for you!
Starting in 2020, new Medicare enrollees in Texas will no longer be able to select Medigap Plans C or F. However, current beneficiaries with these plans can keep them.
Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, the main difference is in cost. Be sure to compare policies to ensure you’re getting the best value.
Texas offers up to 54 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on your county of residence. Also called Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage is a private plan that covers all the benefits of Original Medicare, with additional perks such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage. In Texas, the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage runs from January 1 to March 31. During this time, individuals already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan or choose to return to Original Medicare.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D for this benefit. In Texas, there were 27 Part D plans available in 2019. If you want to avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan or a standalone Part D plan.
