Virginia Medicare Plans

As you approach eligibility for Virginia Medicare plans, you'll need to make important choices regarding your healthcare coverage.

Medicare Supplements help cover the deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other costs not covered by Original Medicare, potentially saving you thousands. They also provide the flexibility to see any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans offer similar benefits to Original Medicare but include additional perks, such as prescription drug coverage, and may not require an extra premium.

Virginia Medicare plans open enrollment

Medicare beneficiaries in Virginia become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Initial enrollment starts three months before your birth month and continues for three months after. During this period, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.

While you can enroll in a supplement at any time, the initial enrollment period is the best time to apply because you cannot be denied based on your health.

Medigap Plans

Medicare Supplements in Virginia help cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance not paid by Original Medicare.

This can save you thousands of dollars, as Medicare only covers about 80% of your outpatient costs. Additionally, Original Medicare does not have limits on out-of-pocket expenses. A supplement plan would cap your out-of-pocket spending.

Another benefit is that you're not restricted to specific networks and can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

There are 10 standardized plans, labeled A through N. All plans with the same letter must provide the same coverage, so the only difference is the price. Be sure to compare your options. Alternatively, you can use our service to save both time and money, as we’ll handle all the shopping for you!

Starting in 2020, new Medicare enrollees won’t be able to choose Medigap Plans C or F in Virginia. However, beneficiaries already enrolled in these plans can continue to keep them.

Since these plans are standardized by the federal government, the only difference is the cost. Make sure you have someone reviewing the policies to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

Medicare Advantage plans

Virginia offers up to 34 Medicare Advantage plans, depending on the county you reside in. Also referred to as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage is a private plan that provides all the benefits of Original Medicare, along with additional perks like dental, prescription drug, and vision coverage. In Virginia, the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage runs from January 1 to March 31. If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different plan during this open enrollment or choose to return to Original Medicare.

Medicare Part D

Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D. In Virginia, there are 27 Part D plans available in 2020. If you want to avoid paying out-of-pocket for prescriptions, consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan or a standalone Part D plan.
