In addition to Alabama Medicare plans, there are standardized Medicare supplement plans, also referred to as Medigap plans.
Alabama residents are eligible for Medigap plans A, B, C, D, F, G, H, K, L, M, and N.
While you can enroll in a Medigap plan at any time throughout the year, it’s advantageous to sign up during your open enrollment period.
The open enrollment period for Medicare supplements occurs during the first six months after you start Medicare Part B.
During this time, Alabama Medicare supplement companies must approve your application, even if you have a pre-existing health condition. While you can apply for a Medigap plan after the open enrollment period, you will need to pass health underwriting.
Medicare Supplement Plans F and G are among the most popular due to their comprehensive coverage.
Plan F covers all the deductibles and coinsurance not paid by Original Medicare. However, starting January 1, 2020, new Medicare enrollees can no longer access Medigap Plan F or C. If you were born in 1954 or earlier, you can still enroll in Plan F.
As a result, Medigap Plan G is expected to become the most popular option. Plan G covers all the deductibles and coinsurance left by Original Medicare, except for the Part B deductible.
All Alabama Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans must adhere to the same rules established by Medicare. Carriers are permitted to ask only one qualifying health question regarding kidney failure (end-stage renal disease or ESRD).
As long as you do not have ESRD, you are eligible for a Medicare Part C plan in Alabama, provided you live within the plan’s service area.
Enrollment in these plans is only allowed during specific periods.
Your initial enrollment period begins when you first become eligible for Medicare. If you choose to enroll in Medicare Advantage at a later time, you can do so during the annual election period, which runs from early October to the beginning of December.
If you’d like to check your eligibility, we can help assess your status and find a plan that suits your needs.
Original Medicare and Medicare Supplements do not include prescription drug coverage, but you can enroll in Medicare Part D to get this coverage. In Alabama, there are more than 29 Part D plans available. Medicare Advantage is another alternative that may include prescription drug coverage. Be sure to consult with a licensed Alabama Medicare agent to help you choose the plan that best fits your budget and needs.
