Medigap Plan D

Medigap Plan D is a Medicare supplement that helps cover costs not paid by Medicare Parts A and B. It is sold by private insurance companies.

Medigap Plan D is different from Medicare Part D. Plan D is for extra medical coverage, while Part D covers prescription drugs.

What does Medigap Plan D cover?

Don’t confuse Medigap Plan D with Medicare Part D—Plan D does not cover prescription drugs. No Medigap plan includes drug coverage.

However, Medigap Plan D does cover:

● Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs for up to 365 extra days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted

● Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayments

● Part B copayments and coinsurance

● The first three pints of blood for a medical procedure

● Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility care

● The Part A deductible

● 80% of foreign travel emergency costs, up to the plan’s limits

Plan D does not cover the Part B deductible or excess charges (extra fees some doctors charge beyond Medicare’s limit). Some states don’t allow excess charges.

What Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan should I choose?

Medigap Plan D offers a good balance between cost and coverage. It covers more than Plans A and B but less than Plans F and G, which have higher premiums but offer more benefits.

The best plan for you depends on whether you prefer lower monthly costs with higher out-of-pocket expenses or higher premiums with more coverage.

A licensed agent at MAC Insurance can help you compare options and find the best fit for your needs.

Medigap Plan D Premiums

In 2025, Medigap Plan B premiums typically range from $110 to $210 per month. These premiums vary based on factors like your state of residence, the insurance provider, age, gender, and tobacco use. Generally, states with higher living costs may have higher premiums.

Medigap Plan D versus Medicare Part D

Medicare “parts” refer to Original Medicare benefits, while “plans” are Medicare supplements; Part D covers prescription drugs, while Medigap Plan D helps with Medicare A and B costs but does not include prescription coverage.
